[Creative Title Here]

So in my advertising class we got the assignment to do an entire campaign for the class, and I'm not gonna lie I was bitting nails. How the heck was I qualified to even try.

(By the way ours was Charmin Toilet Paper -Thanks to all those that answered my fun toilet paper questionnaire, it was much appreciated :] )

But slowly the campaign came together step by step. The most mind opening part about the whole campaign was how we came up with our creative or our unique main theme for the entire campaign.

The creative process listed in our text book is:
Immersion, Ideation, Brain fog, Incubation, Illumination, and Evaluation

... to be honest I don't know how much of that I really believed until we actually did it.
We did our research on the company, and brainstormed a few ideas but nothing that really stuck. We came to the time we really needed to make a decision and move forward when an interview remark squeezed itself back into my mind.

It was sweet to see the process actually work and know that the creative part of advertising does just come when it wants yet it really is hard work.

We ended up marketing Charmin toilet paper as a gift idea to new mothers who deserved it; "treat yourself." It was quite fun when we ended up changing packaging and thinking of print ads. Advertising is really growing on me :]

13.1

Four months ago I had a goal. After much encouragement that goal soon entangled two others. We trained our butts off and sacrificed so much.
Saturday, November 20 at 6:30 am in Mesquite, Nevada  we crossed the starting line, 13.1 miles away from accomplishment. In the next two hours and twenty seven minutes later the last four months paid off. The first one third of the course was mostly uphill which killed the calves. Luckily Provo has quite a few hills so we were well trained.

As we bused out to the starting point, we sat by a lady who said she had ran 8 marathons and this was her sixth half. After the race we were talking to her again and she said this was the hardest race shes ran due to the head wind of 20-30 mph and the terrain. It was no easy task running in wind that contradicted all movement forward and the horrible sand that was swept into the eyes.Crossing that finishing line was probably one of the hardest things I have done in my life. The feeling of accomplishment was amazing.

Now its just to decide when and where we will attempt a
full marathon

Harry Harry Potter

Campus seemed to be buzzing with Potter fever all day.

The Bell Tower even played the harry potter theme song. It was magical.

...too bad I didn't get to go the movie at midnight. But I'm glad to say I participated in the celebrations!

Social Networking

So if you haven't noticed social networks have kind of taken over. I know I have accounts on gmail, facebook, blogger, youtube, and on numerous occasions have tapped into many others. My calling in church even revolved around setting up a ward gmail and utalizing facebook as a means of publicity. Because social networking makes communication so easy it can be so exciting. Only question is what is it doing to the way we interact? For those of you who haven't gotten on the band wagon yet, you might want to think twice, "Social Media isn't a fad, it's a fundamental shift in the way we communicate." And heck, hop on -it's a fun ride.

Lasts and Firsts

Saturday was an exciting day. Reasons why:

Last day of work at concessions: I worked maybe 4 hours and they had extra staff so they let me "go home" early. I am not working the last football game due to the fact I have decided to be in running in Arizona that same day and next year I hope to be over seas. Goodbye second job :]

My first BYU football game: Well who would go home when one could watch the game? Although I have been in the stadium every home game since I've moved to provo, I never had the chance to sit in the stands and cheer for my home team. So glad I got to do it at least once :]

just a note...

If you have ever done this, you better feel super SUPER guilty.

I am sitting in the library currently and apparently I picked the wrong table. Some girl shows up and what do I get to see in my peripheral vision for the next 45 minutes? Tonsil hockey. Having a couple make out in front of you while you're innocently TRYING to focus on homework isn't the most pleasant thing. Get a personal study room if you have to cause no one wants to have their apatite ruined.

If you knew me this would not be surprising that...

This commercial aired in the Super Bowl this past year.

Now any person could figure right away when these shoes hit the market what their first flaw was -Ugly!
These shoes seem comparable to crocs, another shoe when it first hit the market that was view as unfashionable. Now I know that crocs were probably never worn on the red carpet but their popularity did quickly picked up because so many enjoyed the quality and comfort of this slip on shoe. The croc industry boomed and even created about many many new styles and products. Now these shape-up shoes seem to be in this same category and something just isn't quite clicking for them in the same way. Being in advertising right now I was trying to think of possible factors and only one made sense.

Crocs got really big with those who wanted practical shoes; mostly moms, working dads, little kids and even the older generation. The people using these shoes were pretty much everyone except the teenagers and young adults, individuals who wanted nothing to do with comfort or practicality, but rather wear the newest look no matter how many blisters they gave you or how bad your feel hurt at the end of the day.

It seems that these Shape-Up shoes are simply targeting the wrong audience.
No matter how much they give you great thighs or help your posture no adolescent  is going to wear them to high school or around campus. Know your audience.

A Glimpse into Clarissa's Last Week

So I have been on a little anti-homework phase. I wouldn't say by any means this is the greatest time in the semester to go on such break -but well things happen. So what have I been doing with my life? Amazing stuff.

I have refocused back on the rest of my life -the one I sometimes forget I have.

I have discovered a few new albums that are hoppin'
1. Habits by Neon Trees
2. Kaleidoscope Heart-Sara Bareilles
3. The Prince of Egypt
4. Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future -The Bird and the Bee

... and have updated my music library (which even syncs to my phone :] )

After receiving a new calling as publicity co-chair, I have been having fun entering and organizing the ward calendar.

I have been trying, key word trying, to get back into shape. I am currently 4 weeks away from running a half marathon and only just slightly behind schedule on my running.

I have been diving into the New Testament, Book of Mormon and General Conference talks like I have never been before done in my life. I am learning so much and loving it!

I have just finished cleaning; my apartment is spic and span. There is no more laundry to be put away, the shelfs are newly organized, pictures of my dearest loved ones all hung up, all the shoes found there homes again, and I even made my bed this morning :] It feels so great to live in a clean home.

... And now there is close to nothing left to do except face the homework. Thanks for the nice little break.

New phone.

I have "upgraded my life."

... and I love it way too much.

Two years finally came around so it was off to the Sprint store for me. I came out a little marveled, nervous, and with a lighter wallet. Oh yeah and a new phone.

This is the Intercept:

Its kind of my new bestfriend... I have not named it yet tho.
(but let me know if you have suggestions)

Wicked sweet features: touch screen, GPS, conversation texting, instant email, can hold all my music, fun games like tetris and connect four, scriptures at my finger tips, 4G network, pretty much any app I can find online is now mine including  (few example i currently have: chuck norris facts, my daily horoscope, flashlight, google sky map, translators, how to tie a tie, mini piano), smart phone, byu daily universe, google calendar, camera and facebook.

I think I may have found true love.

50 cents

This evening at 11:55 I found myself still in the laundry room, getting more and more frustrated with the quarter operated dryers. They seemed to suck quarters and never actually dry anything. Another had been waiting twice as long as I, had re-switched his clothes to the dryer I had just been using (cause it actually worked) and  had to run back to his apartment for the third time to try and scramble up more quarters. Having two extra quarters in my pocket as I left I simple added them to his dryer and left, hoping then when he returned he would be surprised to find his clothes already dry.

Now I post this story not to boast or to make you think better of me, I just want to try and describe the feeling I felt the rest of the night as I kept remembering how I made a small difference in someone else's day. Fifty cents was really nothing to me, but that was perhaps 30 minutes of sleep, a resolution to his frustration, dry clothes, and a hopefully a smile across his face for him. Serving others and making a difference always feels so marvelous.

Now here's the connection. In the field of advertising and even in the competitive business world, life seems to be so cluttered with bright colors, bold font, jingles, and slogans that just add to the clutter of life. From an ethical point of view I don't really know if I wanted to really have a career that resolves around such ideas. I wanted rather to have a profession that I could say "I've contributed to society," not brought it down.

In class we have been learned about public service ads and how they do make a difference and can drastically change statistics by warning, preventing, and encouraging the communities we live in, for good. Well in this laundry room I had a bit of a realization that even through advertising I can continue to have that feel good feeling of helping others, or even by just impacting one. Advertising is not just the negative stuff, it can be the commercial on television about brain cancer awareness, it can be an preview at a movie about illegal downloading, or even a poster to influence people to volunteer at the next community function.

In advertising I can still make a difference.

self mastery. discipline. pain.

I have a friend. He's super outdoorsy, triathlons are his thing and to train for one he's decided to run a marathon this Fall.
... Somehow this friend talked me into running as well. Except I'm wimping out a bit and only running the half marathon. It seems that will be a hard enough task for myself currently.

Like most I've kind of had a bucket list and not that I'm a runner, but I've always wanted to complete a full marathon. Seeing as I am only getting older the time seems to be now.

So wish me luck as I begin training for this endeavor and hope that I can accomplish my goal.

November 20th
is the big day and my 10 week training starts tomorrow :]

im not gonna lie...

school is great.

the usual cool thing to do when it becomes that time of year again is to complain a ton a make comments about how much all your classes are going to be just wonderful in those super sarcastic voices.

well not anymore for me. i am going to fully accept the fact that i truly like, yes like, school. this is when you say to yourself, or even out loud, "wow is she psycho?" but i have a few good reason that you may agree with.

-learning is fun. especially when your smart and take way cool classes.
-at the end one may feel productive, accomplished, and satisfied.
-life is busy again and the rush of running around feel refreshing.
-social networks are reconnected as old faces pop back up.

yes the homework does pile up and yes the classes on occasion do get boring. but im forking away the big bucks for this education and i wouldnt be doing it if i didnt want to and i didnt somewhere back there, hidden in some small place, enjoy school. there i said it and im not ever going back

... well atleast not until midterms start.

homeless

This has been sitting in my post drafts for awhile now... and I'm just getting around to actually posting it but can i just say how off-campus housing can be so frustrating.

So they kick everyone out of their apartments at the end of the school semesters. And move in day is usually only a few days before the next school semester starts. Only problem is there is quite a few days difference in between where off campus students are homeless.

example: this year exams ended the 12th, check out day was the 13th, move back in day 23rd.

So thats eleven nights that 80% of the student body has no where to sleep nor keep their junk.

A few different options that different students take:
1. Go home
2. Stay with family
3. Sleep on another friends couch (who of course is not moving housing or has other housing worked out)
4. Pay stupid fees to stay late at your housing or early move in fees at your new place. (umm no thank you i already paid a full rent once this month even if you are kicking me out early and i would rather not pay you twice)
5. Live in your car

...of course very few of these options have an alternative place to put all of your life belongings so that's a whole different list of where your stuff might end up. Most people seem to just disperse it. A few boxes here, a few pieces of furniture there, and it only takes all of the next semester re-locating who you pawned a few boxes of stuff on during your moving process.

So the answer is quite simple to this whole mess, don't ever move.

advise

Emily is going to college. crazy.

Natalia and I got to spend her last night in provo with here and we ended up sharing our wisdom about the new life she will be living in rexberg ... of course it was mostly about dating, typical, but also about academics, and adjusting to independent life.

We had some way good laughs :]

Emily even shared something her mother told her which we thought was very applicable:
"Before you get married...
you need to fall in love twice and break two hearts."

Loved it and thought it was wonderful council to all of us crazy byu co-eds.

You will do wonders Em and you will love college. Love you girls :]

World's Largest Water Balloon Fight

So I'm pretty cool cause I participated in setting a world record.
(see now all of you are wishing you had me sign your yearbook after all)

Although it was kind of painful getting hit in the face, back, and other fun parts that were very painful, but not going to mention by name, it was once in a life time thing and I actually have learned a lot from.

The coolest part about this whole thing that I have recently become aware of is that this guy named Kyle Andrews came and filmed during the chaos for the makings of his music video.

Not only is the song pure heart thrilling, but the music video that BYU advertising actually created was quite astonishing as well. Students from my university, from my major were able to put this amazing video together, that ended up starring on the home page of youtube. Genius I'm telling you.

It is quite exciting to know that I soon could be a part of these creations. So excited for the program and harnessing the creativity behind it all.

HFAC on fire

Tuesday was very eventful at work. After devotional all if us ticket girls grabbed some lunch and just after we clocked in and sat down at our computers to get back to work the FIRE ALARM goes off. Standard protocol, drills happen, no problem. we evacuate. well minutes later numerous fire trucks pull onto campus sidewalks and they start hooking up their hoses!!! I got a few juicy pics of the firefighters and the firetrucks...

by this point people started congregating curious as to what was going on.
... they wouldn't tell us much.

Well seeing we were being paid to sit outside the hfac us girls had a little fun snapping some goofy pics as well.

After about 45 minutes they let us back in. The building did smell a little of smoke and we got the good story later from the boss.

The Daily Universe also had an article.

best weeks of the summer

So my family took their usual road trip this year out to utah. although they didnt have ice cream melting in the door of the sliding door nor did they get stranded in wyoming and end up sleeping on the side of the road in a tent, the trip did seem quite eventful.

The day they got in there were lots of hugs and slobbery kisses from zak (he makes it apparent to make sure he licks his lips to make sure they are quite moist before he kisses you). The following day was probably one of the most exciting being all together. Kassie went into labor while the rest of us sat eagerly at grandma oliphants waiting for updates every couple of minutes. In the mean time we had fun shaving terrills head. Terrill, a few other cousins and uncles did this to support my grandma whos going through chemo right now.

Ben, Spencer, Terrill, James, Yvonne

Crissa couldn't resist shaving a T into the head of Mr. T.

Kassie and Jesse became parents to a little boy (see previous post) name Emmett Jesse Draper... and boy is he just adorable.

Fun things we got to together included seeing the 4th of july parade together, visiting purple turtle, spending the after noon at pioneer park, playing games at calvins, many bbq and get togethers at the grandmas, and even swimming.

While amanda and i were in the same town i also offered to help her with senior pictures so natalia joined us and we had a girls night having fun and playing salon and went out and took a few. they turned out pretty good for my not so great camera abililties and our lack of light but either way amanda sure did look gorgeous! :]

It was hard to say goodbye and their stay seemed to just wiz by but only a few more months until christmas when we are all together again and after alecia's little one comes and richard is home from the mish.

LOVE YOU FAMILY!

June Jubilee

Freaking sweet weekend.

BYU is pretty sweet in the fact that we don't have much of a stranger line. Its more of the
"I go here, you go here, we probably have a lot in common, therefore we are friends" ideology.
So a friend and I sit down in the wilk terrace and three boys at the table next to us after a minutes are all like "hey whats up? we should all eat lunch together."
And now you are thinking.. they just thought clarissa's friend was cute. And you would probably be right, but still it's cool that we could randomly meet three nice kids and have a few laughs over lunch together.

byu is rad.

The evening concluded with a RS sleepover at the Pack's home which included lots of junk food, chick flicks (confession of a shopaholic) boy talk, and nail painting. It's not much of a stereotype of what happens at sleepovers when it always really does happen.

Saturday was cleaning checks. There is always a love-hate relationship when it comes to those things.
But yeah afterwards we hopped in the pool, and played

toothpicks

Ever played before?
It goes kind of like this:

1. Someone dives in with a few toothpicks in their hands and places them at the bottom on the deep end of the pool.
2. All participants wait for these really hard to see tooth picks to start surfacing.
3. Once you see a tooth pick you jump in and try to grab in before someone else does and jumps for the same tooth pick

Rules
1. When you snag a tooth pick it has to be as you jump in. No fishing around for tooth picks once your in the water.
2. If you missed you hop out and have to try again.

Object of the game: get more tooth picks as your neighbor and push as many people in the pool in the mean time :]

Kassie's baby shower was that afternoon. I got baby Emmett a cute little BYU get up (I will not have my first nephew wearing Utah red)

And what a better way to end the day than with a dance party, whitehouse style :]

sunday was splendid as well.
*church was extra good
*i saw Jon at the temple- that was weird
*delish food at break-the-fast
*got a visit from the best natalia in the whole world

Hello World!

So today is the first day of the rest of my life... and what better way to celebrate than by starting a blog! Well that and yesterday I finished with finals and all the chaos that comes with being a full time BYU student. I forgot how amazing it feels to not have a care in the world. So yeah lets just say I'm gonna have a bit of time on my hands, and when I say I bit, I mean alot. So for all those out there who might be reading this and find my super fascinating life worth looking into, hope you can get a little glimpse into the life of a crazy, immature, single co-ed, bubbly, wisconsin loving, ex-freshman. Halle-fricken-lujah I survived freshman year!

Freshman year. Kind of impossible to describe when you really think about it. You just got to do it and come out realizing how much you've learned.

These are a few things (ok a little more than a few) I learned my freshman year:

1. Shoes may actually have a purpose other than to look cute
2. Dishes never go away no matter how long you try to ignore them
3. "Dating boys in your ward is like peeing in a pool, it may be fun at the time but later you have to swim in it"

Here We Go Again

So....

While I've been away serving as a missionary for my church, someone hacked my google / gmail account.  The account was sending spam apparently, and google tried to reach me, but I am out of touch with my gmail account so I didn't get the message. So to protect the universe from the spam coming from my account, google decided to shut it down.  How nice of them.

Not only did they shut down my gmail account, but everything associated with my google account tied to that gmail.  I lost ALL my google docs.  Not pretty --  I'm a college student normally, so everything of value was in a google doc.  I lost all my old emails and all my contacts!  And I lost my blog.  These are the hazards, I suppose of having too many products associated with google.

But, my Mom is a crazy person, who never throws away email from her kids.  Amazingly, she has every blog that I ever had emailed to her.  Whats up with that???!??

Anyway, as a  surprise, she has recreated my blog, to the best of her ability from the emails that she kept.

Thanks Mom!

[Wahahaha -- I love posing as someone else.  And who will ever know? Mom]
