i come home to this face

let me introduce you to a little guy named
zadok quinn

he is number ten, the omega, the z, the last of the oliphant herd
he is six years old and loves the first grade
he tends to climb on people, give really good hugs, and has the most kissable cheeks
common nicknames for this little guy include:
zak-zak
wacky-zakky
zak-zak-attack
zak-a-licious
and
zak
this last week zak made a christmas list and it was enough to make anyone's heart melt so i thought i would share

(the word that is cut off is supposed to say "robot")
isn't he just a stinkin cute kid?

christmas morning

amanda is back in her pjs trying to beat a mind puzzle; zak is sucking on a homemade carmel sucker from the cousins; stuart, terrill, and hyrum are still playing with the many legos from santa; dad is napping on the couch; mom is browsing through a new book; lydia is putting on a homemade necklace from stu; alecia, fred, and myra are  bound to walk in the door any second with bright eyes and rosey cheeks; and i am wearing my fuzzy socks and playing warm christmas songs trying to take in just how perfect it all is. it may be four oclock in the afternoon and we still have over half the gifts wrapped and under the tree still, but i am pretty sure this is the way families and holidays are supposed to be.

merry merry christmas

twenty one

today i am older/old.

or should i just say a real adult, which is practically the same thing right?
i cant believe this day finally came, sometimes i honestly doubted it would.

so much on my mind today. here are just a few things rolling around up there:

brats. finals. accounting. more finals. gchat conversations. mission papers. wonderful examples. clubbing and tube tops. the fact that i just said mission papers and tube tops on the same line. the fact that kassie will be the only one to get that. preach my gospel. laundry. what am i supposed to wear. sleep. flying home. packing. wedding. birthday cake. tony's tacos. iron man. really good music. white strips. my really messy room. christmas lights. charlie brown. warm weather. mustaches. procrastination. only three days til im back in madison wisconsin. papers. washing my hair. stress. adult stuff. great friends. ice skating. heber. dancing. memories.

somehow im this really lucky gal where i never have classes on my birthday, it miraculously always falls on finals week. i know mother it's my own fault for being fifteen days over due, but im not much of the november birthday personality anyways.

december twelfth is a pretty important day. i get to share my birthday with jamie southern, the best senior homecoming date and sporter of the best redhead mohawk; marcello ortolano, a kid who is almost as tall as shaq and has one of the most amazing families; brother harrison who tried so diligently to teach me the book of mormon my first year of seminary; frank sinatra, bob barker, and lastly the lady of the guadalupe holiday, which i dont really know much about.
people, its a day to celebrate :)

thank you all for the many birthday thoughts, wishes, gifts, and kind words, i am always reminded how many wonderful people are in my life every time the big day rolls around. i wouldn't be the twenty-one-year-old i am today if i didn't have you all as blessings in my life.

...yes that also means im partially putting the blame on you for all my faults and craziness :)

ducknapping

#72 reason i love byu
the byu police beat, ever bother to read it? you should.

byu campus is unlike any other campus in the world because it lacks in criminal excitement.
instead it has an overflow of good clean and stupid entertainment.
for example post thanksgiving break i might have shed a few tears enjoying this imparticular article:

Theft:

Nov. 20: A female reported seeing two individuals feeding ducks while standing very close to the water. One approached and grabbed a duck while the other recorded the event on his cell phone. They put the duck in a bag and ran to an older model pickup truck and drove west down 800 North.

thankful for thanksgiving

this year was an out of the ordinary thanksgiving, but when i say out of the ordinary i also mean fabulous.

this is why:

emily is in town so we partied last night. we got up at a decent hour this morning and made an effort to expand our stomach for today's later meal. it was a scrumptious b'fast, and for once i didnt burn the bacon. why? cause i made emily cook it instead. we also even made warm cinnamon rolls :)

im going to be an aunt again and again! alecia announced she was preggie just a few weeks ago and kassie made the announcement today as well! they are both expecting within just a few days in each other this may. they just cant keep from playing these games with each other. its okay ladies, we secretly love it too.

i made frog eye salad to represent the oliphant fam, that was just for you mommy.

aunt lari was so sweet and was all up for letting me invite myself over for a delicious turkey dinner.

grandpa picked me up, we had a great chat on the way to pg. ive got really amazing grandparents who take good care of me.

i may be five years older than the oldest child there, but i thankfully still got to sit at the kids table. its so much more fun and you get to play with your food :)

after pie, taylor played lulling piano music for me as i slowly dosed into a post turkey dinner slumber. she is so talented on the ivorys.

they sent me home with LOTS of food. thanks again.

hillary, my roommate, and i washed dishes and cleaned the apartment to great music after all our cooking, so im now sitting in a spotless apartment browsing tomorrows ads.

im heading over to my friends to watch home alone 2 in just a bit

and then emily and i are heading out to go black friday shopping at midnight!

now it may not have been a holiday where i got to beat amanda in the turkey trot, play settlers, consume excessive amounts of cheesecake, be with all the cousins down in warm weather, or even home freezing in wiscansin, but i still got to share it with those that i love. happy thanksgiving all. we have so much to be thankful for.

scholastic suicide

today i signed up for three weeks of absolute carnage.

goal: to complete a full independent study course online before December 3rd.

why i think this is even possible, i do not know. but please wish me luck, keep me in your prayers, feel free to stop by with warm delicious cookies, and do not feel too frustrated with me if i have close to zero contact with the rest of the world.

17 credits here i come.

eleven

the number eleven isnt even that great of a number. i mean i know 11:11 looks kind of cool on a digital clock but why eleven?

why dont we wish at 3:33? in high school it marked a much more meaningful and pleasant moment. it was even signaled by the clanging of the school bell, celebrating one less day of waking up at five am, braces, and ap european history and one more day of after school soccer, musical practice, and drivers ed.

or why dont we wish at 12:12 in celebration of the birth of muah ;]

either way today @11:11 my english class is having a moment of silence. i would tell you what my wish is but i dont want to chance the idea that it might not come true.  i will let you know that it was a good one though. a really, really good one.

what are you wishing for?

fall back

the end of daylight savings time means i get up early enough to actually do my hair and put on make up in the mornings, but it also means walking out of the hfac everyday to pitch black. blah.

self declared graduation requirements

i had a recent discussion with my roommates about requirements to graduate from high school should include playing a sport, or being a part of some sort of team. high school is a time where you learn much more than just trigonometry and about the cold war; it is a time to make mistakes, to learn who your friends are,  and all about personal responsibility.

high school was a crazy time of my life (like im sure most of ours was), but while it was not always peaches and cream i will never regret the experiences i had because it made great memories and i am a better person because of it. luckily in high school i had the chance to be apart of quite a few team things, but that doesnt mean looking back  there were a few things i never did that i always wanted to do, and now will never get the chance. yes, sneaking out was one of them.

this time i am having a new experience that is very very different than lafollette. this time its called college. college at byu nonetheless. and this time i am making sure everything on the check list gets done.

i am a strong believer in memories. they are all we really have. a life is only made up of memories, so why not fill it with great ones.

The To Do Before I Graduate List:

¨  shake cecil’s hand
¨  spend a night on campus
þ  planetarium
þ  send a package to a missionary from the wilk post office
¨  an internship

¨  play hide and seek in the library
¨  live in a house
þ  true blue football
þ  use the byu book exchange
¨  study abroad
þ  have a boy take you to squaw peak ;] (bet you my story is better than yours)
þ  sunday midnight denny’s run
¨  be a loyal member of a campus club
¨  feed the ducks
þ  dance on the deJong stage
þ  take a dance class
¨  get an editorial published in the D.U.
þ  meet jimmer
¨  light the Y
þ  stay in the library til you hear the “get out” music
¨  attend every type of athletic sporting event
¨  get a 100% on a test
þ  have pebbles (or other small objects) thrown at your window
¨  drop a penny off the roof of the swkt
þ  join an intramural team
þ  attend a baptism in the jsb
¨  go to all five of the museums on campus
þ  have a calling you could only get in a singles ward
þ  pull an all-nighter doing homework
þ  stay out all night
¨  attend a byu ball (I went to a fancy banquet at the Hinckley Center - does that count?)
þ  get a “safe walk” home
¨  dine at every restaurant on campus
¨  get mentioned in the police beat
¨  make out in the stacks
þ  international movie cinema
¨  wear pink in the periodicals on a friday night
¨  sit in on a random interesting class just because
þ  stay in provo for spring/summer
þ  have a campus job
¨  sit on the floor of the marriott for devo
þ  skip a class (this should have many more than just one check next to it)
þ  tunnel singing

now its your turn to make your own, its now or never folks.
and please let me know if theirs any good ones i need to add to the list.

okay so this wasn't me... but i thought it was funny

I was in the public restroom and had just sat down, when a voice from the next stall said "Hi!, how are you ?" Embarrassed, I said, "I'm OK". The voice said "So, what are you up to?" I said, "Just doing the same thing as you, sitting here!" From next door, "Can I come over?" Rather shocked, I said "I'm kinda busy right now" The voice said, "Listen, I will have to call you back, there's an idiot next door answering all my questions."  :]

fam, strawberry days, wranglers

roh-dee-oh

a public exhibition where many spectators gather wearing cowboy boots and excessively large belt buckles to observe handsome men in tight wranglers get muddy and fall off large animals. Sometimes delicious concessions are available such as fresh strawberry's and cream, which the majority of usually ends up dripped down the front of the consumer, or the innocent person next to them.

a very memorable memorial weekend

If you have never lived or visited Provo, Utah, you may not know that it is one of the most fun places to live if you are an LDS student who wants a fantabulous social life. If this is not your cup of tea or place in life, Provo may not be for you.

But for me, I am almost always that person. To much of a anything, good or not so good, is never a good thing (did you follow that?). Yes I have been in the the land of fruits and hunnies for two years now with only a few trips outside to the real world to break up my false reality. I've had the chance to head home to Wisconsin twice now (both for Christmas) and a few small trips including St. George, Mesquite, Mesa, and Boise.

The breaks are always well needed and 100% refreshing.
This last trip was a little farther.
__________________________

Destination: Seattle, WA

I don't really know how it happened, it just kind of did.
I got a ride up from two good friends who were visiting friend and family in the area.
Thanks again Burgs and Kelly!

So I had never been to the Northwest before so i made sure i had the best of the best tour guides for the many adventures awaiting for the weekend. Luckily that wasn't to hard to find as a close friend, Ian, offered to put me up and give me the grand tour. I wanted to see all the important things.
Such as...                                                                         .

Pikes Market Place
we saw the flying fish, indulged in a few refreshments, strolled though the shops poking our heads into a few cute stores, and enjoyed all the fresh smells of fruits, veggies, seafood, and flowers.

The World Fair Space Needle
we didn't go up but we enjoyed the it from the bottom.
And that's me eating my clam chowder.

The Sound Water Front
would you believe it didn't rain once on us the whole weekend?! the weather was gorgeous and I needed a nap so we soaked up a little sun and when our eyes were open did a little people watching :] and enjoyed the view. It was a beautiful day.

The Original Starbucks
the logo sure has changed quite a bit over the years...

The Gum Wall
So for those of you who don't know this exists, it does. Below is proof. Buts its just a 40 foot wall that has literally millions of pieces of gum on it. It's below Pikes Market Place and a bug tourist attraction. I don't know the whole story exactly but it sure is a sight to see. And of course we added to it :]

Hippies and Indie Music
Apparently the northwest is known for its granola crunchers and tree huggers, and lucky us, there was a whole park overflowing with them. We had a blast at Seattle's annual Folk Fest, aka lots of  dreadlocks, bare feet, and acoustic guitars. It made me feel right at home in Madison.

The Seattle Skyline
We ended our adventures on Saturday at Alki Beach, across The Sound and watched the sunset. The skyline of Seattle at night was stunning.
(before)

(after)

The Greenery
It was just how Stephanie Meyers described it. Luscious and green. Ian took me to a beautiful waterfall just off the road but we snuck in a little bit of trail running later in the trip too.

and lastly
A Trip to the Beach
we took off our shoes, dipped our toes in the water, searched for pretty shells (I've never been shell hunting before!), and just laid out enjoying the beautiful sunny morning.

Pretty much it was one of the most memorable trips I have ever had, but looking back it almost feels like a dream. Way to perfect to be reality.
I can't wait to go back.

for your own good I would recommend not reading ...

pinterest.com

disclosure: this website should be viewed with caution, it may have addicting attributes. It may be more addicting than facebook or even wikipedia. To illustrate such attributes I would tell you how many hours I have spent on it in the last week alone, but I've decided its just too embarrassing. So I'll keep that to myself. I repeat, continue with caution.

dance

dance is beautiful. i wish i had the talent to express myself in this way.
question: why can music and dance touch our hearts in a way nothing else can?
what makes them so powerful?

congrats to the talented byu animation professor who created probably the most beautiful animation piece i have ever seen. simply inspiring. i think i will sign up for that dance class in the fall. thanks.

extra sprinkles please

Yesterday i opened my front door and was greeted by two cute little faces. Now while BYU students probably have the most children compared other universities, they seem to be well hidden. Provo usually seems like the town in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang where all the children are in hiding or locked up in the bottom of some dusty castle. But this time they were not locked up, they were in my living room! My dear roommate was watching them for a friend. But when i say watching i mean more like playing with them. And boy were they having fun.

This is a list of some of the stuff they were doing:
1. coloring
2. hopping around
3. jumping off couches
4. throwing pillows
5. rolling on the floor
6. laughing
7. make silly noises

Now just coming home from a full day of class and work i had a full list of things "to do" if i wanted more than 4 hours of sleep that night (which i still got by the way)

So these are the super exciting things i got to do while i sat there and watched them have fun:
1. wash the dishes
2. cleaning the rest of the kitchen too
3. send a few emails
4. updating a few ward contacts
5. make an project outline
6. write a paper
7. working on an excel spreadsheet
8. try to find something i was willing to digest

sometimes i just want to be a kid again.

Things i miss most about being a kid:
1. sack lunches with juice boxes
2. saying silly stuff and getting away with it.

3. playing outside.
4. and when its gross out, playing just as cool of games in.

5. mismatching clothes
6. the ice cream truck

7. saturday morning cartoons in your pjs
8. bedtime poems

april's savy saying

"Each of us will have our own Fridays, those days when the universe itself seems shattered and the shards of our world lie littered about us in pieces. We will all experience those broken times when it seems we can never be put together again. We will all have our Fridays, but I testify to you in the name of the One who conquered death, Sunday will come. In the darkness of our sorrow, Sunday will come. No matter our desperation, no matter our grief, Sunday will come. In this life or the next…Sunday will come!"

-Joseph B. Wirthlin (General Conference, Oct 2006)

Happy Easter season everyone. And isn't there is so much to be happy about :]

For Good.

I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you...

Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good

So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend.

-Stephen Schwartz,
Wicked the Musical

Poppa Paul

This last week I got to see my Dad.
He was in town to visit to his mother. Grandma O isn't doing so swell.

We got to spend some good times together.
I even brought him to my singles ward to show him off :]

... it back fired a little bit when he told me he made a few comments in Priesthood about dating. I wouldnt't be surprised now if the men in my ward all think I'm a little desperate- haha oh well.

He also took an hour and half and told my apartment, over dinner, the long version of how he met and married my mother. If you ever have a chance to hear it, it's quite entertaining. And yes it includes, kidnapping.

Dad's are great.

I never got a picture.
So sorry, none to share.

Happy St. Patties Day

Today luck is on my side.

And here is why:

1. I have an almost entire green wardrobe, so getting dressed this morning wasn't in the least bit hard. Hope you are wearing green today as well cause I'm one good pincher. The guy sitting next to me in Statistics may have gotten threatened.

2. Leprechauns visited our apartment! These little guys must have snuck in after Kelsea and I went to bed super late cause we were being silly all sugared up from birthday celebration. They turned the butter magically green, Stacey's adored milk green, the apple juice green, and Kelsea's birthday donuts were half green and half rainbows.

After a first go, we seemed to be hit again this morning. All the milk in the fridge was dyed (Kelsea's and Mine) and Kelsea's and Mine bathroom had very green toilet bowl water. We will see if by the end of the day they return again and find something else to change color.

 3. I have the best co-workers in the world. You should be super jealous. Like today Melissa had a St.      Patties Day joke to share:

"How many beans are in Irish bean soup?"

"239, because one more would make it 'too farty!'"
(that would be 240 said in an Irish accent)

Pretty lucky day. And I'm not even Irish!

what would i do without you?

friends are not family.
but in college they kind of are.
and they sure make up for family when they are not around.

thanks to everyone who has recently given me a squeeze, smile, or a shoulder when i needed one.
and i've needed one of those a lot lately.
you know who you are.
thanks.
thanks a lot.
